Firearm Licensing

License to carry firearms can be issued for the following reasons. Additional restrictions may be deemed appropriate by this authority.

  • All Lawful Purposes
  • Target
  • Hunting
  • Sport
  • Employment

A license to possess a machine gun will only be issued to a Massachusetts certified firearms instructor, or a bonafide collector.

All first time applicants must provide certification that the applicant successfully completed a Firearms Training Safety Course by a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Basic Firearms Course Instructor or Hunter Education and Firearms Safety Course given by the Massachusetts Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. (Applies to class' A', 'B' and ‘C' Firearms Identification Cards Only).

All applicants seeking a License to Carry Firearms for employment purposes shall on company letterhead submit a signed letter from their employer stating his or her duties and need to carry a firearm. In the event the applicant is terminated or changes employment the License to Carry Firearms shall be revoked. It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify the Licensing Authority of the Hopedale Police Department upon any change of employment.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify the Licensing Authoriry of the Hopedale Police Department when moving. It also the responsibility of the applicant to notify the Jurisdiction moving into, and the Firearms Records division. Please download the change of address form, and follow the instructions within. You must make your notification in writing within thirty (30) days of changing your address and you must send this form via certified mail . Failure to do so could result in suspension or revocation of your LTC or FID .

RESTRICTED FID CARD (Class D) FEE REDUCTION NOTICE
Chapter 140 of the Acts of 2003 in Section 34 reduces the fee for first time FID Cards Restricted to Chemical Sprays (Class D) from $100 to $25. Renewals for this restricted FID Card continue to be free. Of the new $25 fee, 50% stays with the town, and 50% goes to the state. The bill was signed by the Governor on November 26, 2003. The wording change in Massachusetts General Laws will occur in Chapter 140, section 129B(9). The $25 fee for all first time FID Cards Restricted to Chemical Sprays (Class D) is now in effect.

Fingerprints will be taken as part of the process. A record check will be performed on all applicants. If record check is successful, then the application process is complete and the application is forwarded to Boston for approval. You will be notified by us when your license is returned. The approval process can take up to several weeks.

The application fee is $100.00 for all new and renewal Class ‘A', ‘B' and ‘C' Firearms Cards. A Restricted Class ‘D' Firearms Card is $25.00, with no fee for a renewal. Your fee is non-refundable and payable when your application is submitted. The fee is waived for a firearms license for any person that is 70 years old. Forms of payment accepted are Cash, Personal Check, Bank Check or Money Order. Make your check payable to the Town of Hopedale.
